Pleasant Valley Elementary School

Pleasant Valley Elementary School

Ultimate Construction served as the exterior envelope subcontractor to Gilbane Building Company during the construction of Pleasant Valley Elementary School in South Windsor, Connecticut. Working under close oversight from both the architect and construction team, the project required a high level of preperation & coordination across the team in installing multiple exterior systems, including aluminum wall panels, ACM panels, custom cornices, and architectural screen assemblies.

The work was completed in 2023 and involved coordinating long-lead, custom-fabricated materials while executing installation through winter conditions. Despite the complexity of the assemblies and the sensitivity of the design requirements, Ultimate Construction delivered its scope in alignment with the project schedule.

Scope of Work

Ultimate Construction’s scope included the installation of multiple exterior wall systems across different sections of the building, totaling approximately 10,000 square feet. The scope consisted of:

  • 4,000 SF of ATAS rigid aluminum wall panels (.040″) installed over KnightWall thermally broken sub-framing with polyisocyanurate rigid insulation
  • 6,000 SF of 4mm Alucobond ACM panels and cornice assemblies installed over KnightWall thermally broken sub-framing with polyisocyanurate rigid insulation
  • Custom shop-fabricated .050″ aluminum cornices at school entrances with flush reveal soffit panels
  • Construction Specialties architectural roof screen assemblies

Installation included exterior panels at the gymnasium, window infill panels, screen walls, and architectural feature areas, all requiring tight tolerances and consistent alignment

Project Highlights

The most significant challenge our team faced on the Pleasant Valley project was the coordination and execution of the panel systems. Due to the custom nature of many components – specifically curved ACM crown molding, rounded panels, and detailed entrance cornices – material procurement carried lengthy lead times, requiring early, accurate verification of existing conditions.

To mitigate risk, Ultimate Construction conducted a full 3D LiDAR scan of the building once all prerequisite conditions were in place. This scan allowed the team to confirm dimensions, elevations, and alignment before panel fabrication was finalized with the manufacturer. Given the architect’s strict design requirements, accuracy during layout and coordination was critica

Additional challenges included winter installation conditions and the sequencing required to accommodate long-lead materials. Through careful planning and disciplined execution, Ultimate Construction maintained progress and adapted operations as needed to remain on schedule.

Outcome / Results

Despite a demanding level of architectural detail, long material lead times, and winter conditions, Ultimate Construction completed its scope on schedule and without safety incidents. Daily job hazard analyses were conducted throughout the project, resulting in zero recordable safety events.

The completed exterior assemblies reflect the design intent of the project while delivering durable, high-performance building envelope systems. Pleasant Valley School stands as a strong example of Ultimate Construction’s ability to execute complex, custom exterior work under tight controls and high expectations.
