University of Hartford Hursey Center

University of Hartford Hursey Center

In 2021, Ultimate Construction was selected by Whiting-Turner to deliver the full exterior panel system for the Hursey Center at the University of Hartford. The project carried an accelerated schedule and was executed through the peak of winter, requiring careful coordination, flexible manpower planning, and consistent field execution despite limited daylight and challenging weather conditions.

The scope included the installation of approximately 16,000 square feet of Porcelanosa porcelain panel rainscreen mounted on an aluminum, thermally broken sub-framing system with continuous mineral wool insulation. Installation was completed over a four-month timeline while maintaining alignment with the broader construction schedule.

Scope of Work

Ultimate Construction was responsible for the installation of 16,000 square feet of porcelain panel rainscreen, imported from Spain. The material carried a three-month lead time, leaving minimal margin for error within a four-month construction window.

The system included five inches of mineral wool insulation and a fully adjustable aluminum sub-framing assembly, requiring extensive layout, coordination, and preparation prior to panel installation. Attentiveness to detail during early phases was critical to maintaining efficiency once panels began arriving on site.

Project Highlights

From award to completion, the Hursey Center required a coordinated, team-wide effort to execute successfully. The project presented several unique challenges, most notably the long lead time on imported materials, which demanded strict adherence to schedule and quality control throughout installation.

In addition, the depth of the wall assembly – including mineral wool insulation and a complex adjustable bracket and rail system – required substantial upfront preparation before any panels could be set. Winter conditions further compressed available working hours and disrupted progress at key points in the schedule.

To overcome these challenges, Ultimate Construction deployed multiple crews across five consecutive weekends after weather-related delays. Leadership remained actively involved in the field, including the lead project manager and company founder, ensuring decisions were made quickly and resources were allocated where needed to maintain momentum.

Outcome / Results

The Hursey Center exterior was completed within the allotted timeframe, allowing the overall project to stay on schedule despite logistical constraints and an active college campus environment. Through extensive planning & commitment to deliver on our portion of the project, Ultimate Construction delivered the rainscreen system as promised – without compromise.

The finished building has since received multiple regional design awards and stands as one of the most recognizable and architecturally distinct structures in the state.
